itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Private 2-hour surf lesson in Lahaina

  • Start lesson on land
  • Learn safety and technique
  • Head into ocean
  • Practice catching waves
  • Receive personalized instructor guidance

“Don’t overthink it—just paddle!” That’s what our instructor, Keahi, yelled as I tried to remember which foot goes forward. We’d started on the sand in Lahaina, laughing at how clumsy we all looked practicing pop-ups. The sun was already warm on my shoulders and I could smell sunscreen mixing with salt air. Honestly, I was nervous about surfing for the first time, but Keahi grinned like he’d seen this a thousand times. He probably has.

Once we got into the water, everything felt slower—like the ocean decided to give us beginners a break that morning. The boards were bigger than I expected (and softer too), so falling off didn’t hurt as much as my ego did when I missed my first wave. But Keahi stayed close, giving little tips (“Look where you want to go!”) and cheering every time one of us stood up for more than two seconds. There were just three of us with him—felt like having a patient friend instead of some coach shouting from far away.

I still remember the feeling of finally catching a wave—kind of shaky, but there’s this rush when you realize you’re actually moving with the water instead of just flopping around in it. My arms were tired by the end but in that good way, you know? And yeah, I wiped out plenty, but somehow that made it better. Walking back up the beach with sand stuck everywhere and Keahi high-fiving us—I didn’t care how ridiculous I looked. If you’re thinking about a private surf lesson in Lahaina, don’t wait for “perfect” conditions or confidence. Just go for it.
