The experience

You arrive 30 minutes early to check in and meet your group. The lesson starts on the sand with a safety briefing and land-based instruction covering the fundamentals: how to position yourself on the board, how to read the water, how to pop up into a standing position. This half-hour foundation means you're not figuring out the basics once you're in the ocean.

Then you paddle out for 90 minutes in the water at Ka'anapali, one of Maui's most consistent beginner breaks. Your instructor stays with your group of up to three people, positioning you in the lineup and calling out when to catch waves. The rash guard and water shoes are provided, so you don't need to bring your own or worry about reef cuts. A staff photographer shoots throughout the lesson. You can buy prints at the end if you want them.

Parking validation covers up to three hours, which gives you time for the lesson and a few minutes to rinse off before heading out. The group setting means you're learning alongside other visitors rather than alone, which changes the energy of the morning. You're all beginners together, and the instructor divides attention equally among the three of you.
