Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Semi-private surf lesson at Ka'anapali Beach

  • Check in 30 minutes before lesson
  • Attend 30-minute land safety lesson
  • Surf for 90 minutes in water
  • Optional photo purchase after lesson

The first thing I learned about surfing at Ka'anapali Beach? Rash guards are not optional. I fumbled with mine in the parking lot while my partner laughed — sunscreen everywhere, sand already sneaking into my shoes. We were almost late because we couldn’t find the right check-in hut (it’s tucked behind a row of palms, by the way), but our instructor, Kaleo, just grinned and said “no stress, you’re on Maui time.” I liked him instantly.

Before we even touched the water, Kaleo made us practice popping up on the board right there on the sand. He showed us how to fall safely (“just flop — don’t fight it”), which sounded easy until I tried it and face-planted into the soft grit. The ocean was louder than I expected — that kind of rolling sound that drowns out your own thoughts for a second. It felt both huge and close at once. When we finally paddled out, my arms burned after five minutes. I didn’t expect that part.

Catching my first wave wasn’t graceful (I wobbled so much Kaleo actually cheered when I just stayed upright), but it was real — salt in my mouth, sun on my neck, and this weird mix of fear and joy that hit all at once. There was a staff photographer bobbing around somewhere snapping pictures; honestly, I forgot about him until after. My partner wiped out spectacularly and came up laughing so hard she swallowed half the Pacific. The best part? Nobody cared if you looked cool or not — everyone on the beach seemed to be rooting for each other.

I still think about that moment when the board finally glided under me and everything went quiet except for wind and water. If you’ve ever wondered whether you could actually surf at Ka'anapali Beach… well, you’ll never know unless you try.
