This is your chance to learn Hawaii’s national sport right where it started—on Maui’s sunny south shore. Practice paddling out with friendly local instructors, catch your very first wave in safe conditions, and take home photos that prove you did it. Perfect for anyone new to surfing or just looking for something different on vacation.
“Okay, who’s ready to get their feet wet?” our instructor called out as we gathered under the palm trees at Kalama Beach Park. The sun was already warming the sand, but there was still a cool breeze coming off the water. We picked out our boards—some longer, some shorter, depending on how brave we felt—and slipped into reef shoes and rash guards. I could hear kids laughing nearby and the sound of someone strumming a ukulele from a picnic table.
Before we even touched the waves, our coach walked us through every step: where to put our feet, how to paddle without tiring out too fast, and what to do if we wiped out (which I definitely did). He kept things light, joking about his own first wipeouts and making sure everyone felt comfortable. The water was clear and surprisingly warm, with gentle waves rolling in—perfect for beginners like us. When it was my turn, he gave me a little push and shouted encouragement as I tried standing up for the first time.
I’ll admit—I fell more than I stood at first. But each time I managed to ride even a small wave toward shore, it felt like a win. Our group cheered each other on between turns. By the end of the two hours, my arms were tired but I couldn’t stop grinning. We finished by meeting up with the photographer who’d caught some of our best (and funniest) moments on camera—honestly, seeing myself actually standing on the board made it all feel real.
Kids ages 8 and up can join with family in a semi-private class; under 8 requires a private lesson. Adult group classes are for ages 11 and older.
No experience needed! This lesson is designed for complete beginners who can swim in the ocean.
You’ll want to bring swimwear and sunscreen; all surfboards, reef shoes, and rash guards are provided at Kalama Beach Park.
