You’ll get real one-on-one coaching on Maui’s quieter beaches with all gear included. It’s relaxed, beginner-friendly, and you’ll leave wanting more—even if you’ve never surfed before.
Salt in the air, sand between my toes—Maui’s morning sun was just starting to warm up when we met our surf coach at a tucked-away beach near Kihei. No crowds, just the soft sound of waves and a couple of early risers jogging by. Our instructor, Kaleo, handed us rash guards and boards right from his truck—no fuss, no waiting in lines.
We started with a quick stretch on the sand. Kaleo showed us how to pop up on the board using a faded wax line as our guide. I could smell sunscreen and plumeria drifting from somewhere nearby. After a few wobbly tries on land (and some laughs), we paddled out together. The water was cool but not cold—felt good after standing under the sun for ten minutes.
Kaleo stayed close the whole time, calling out tips and cheering when one of us caught even half a wave. He pointed out where the reef dips down so we’d know where to aim, something you wouldn’t notice unless you’d been here before. By the end, I actually stood up twice—felt like flying for a second or two.
If you want to try surfing in Maui without feeling rushed or lost in a crowd, this is it. They even rent boards if you want to come back solo tomorrow (I did—wiped out plenty but still grinning). Oh, and don’t forget: bring water and maybe an extra towel—the sand sticks everywhere!
Yes! The session starts with basics on land before heading into gentle waves. The instructor stays with you throughout.
Kids can join as long as they’re comfortable in water and able to follow instructions. Small children can watch from shore or stay in a stroller.
Just bring swimwear, sunscreen, water, and a towel. Boards and rash guards are provided.
You should be comfortable swimming and moving around in water. If you have health concerns or injuries, check with your doctor first.
Your private surf lesson includes use of a quality surfboard and rash guard during class time. The instructor stays by your side in the water for safety and support every step of the way.
