The Experience

There’s this moment I keep replaying: standing barefoot on Jumeirah Beach, wetsuit half-zipped, the air sticky with salt and sunscreen. The city’s glass towers glinted behind us but out here it felt quieter—just the slap of small waves and a couple of gulls arguing over something shiny. Our instructor, Ahmed, handed me my mask and grinned like he’d seen a hundred nervous beginners before. “Don’t worry,” he said. “Everyone breathes weird at first.” And yeah, I did.

The classroom bit was quick—maybe half an hour?—but I still managed to mix up my hand signals once we got in the shallows. Ahmed didn’t laugh (well, not much). He just tapped his chest: “Slow down.” The water was cooler than I expected, but not cold. You could see your toes in the sand even waist-deep. When we finally shuffled out deeper together, my heart thumped so loud I was sure he could hear it through the tank.

I remember the first proper breath underwater—metallic taste from the regulator, bubbles tickling my cheeks—and then suddenly everything slowed down. There were these little darting fish with neon stripes and something that looked suspiciously like a turtle lurking near some rocks (Ahmed pointed; I squinted; maybe it was just wishful thinking). It’s funny how quickly forty-five minutes goes when you’re distracted by breathing and trying not to float away.
