The Experience

The first thing I noticed after we left Dubai was how the skyline faded into this pale haze—like you’re driving into a different chapter. Our driver, Ahmed, had this way of pointing things out just as they appeared: “That’s Jebel Ali Port,” he said, and suddenly there were rows of cranes and ships that looked almost toy-sized from the highway. The road to Abu Dhabi is long but not dull; I kept watching the sand shift colors outside the window, thinking about how people actually live out here. It’s a full-day tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi but honestly, it didn’t feel long with Ahmed telling us little stories—he even joked about the Ferrari World rollercoaster being “faster than any Dubai taxi.”

Walking up to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was something else. There’s this hush as you approach—the white marble almost too bright to look at in the midday sun. I caught a whiff of rosewater near the entrance (maybe someone else’s perfume?) and inside, the coolness under my feet felt like relief. Our guide explained how over 300,000 people can pray here at once—I tried to picture it but couldn’t really grasp it. The details everywhere: gold-tipped columns, mosaic tiles, sunlight bouncing off everything. I fumbled with my scarf and an older woman smiled at me in solidarity.

After that we drove past Al Bateen—Ahmed slowed down so we could see these traditional Emirati houses and a majlis where men were gathered in white robes (I waved; one guy nodded back). The Emirates Palace sits right on the Corniche road—so gold it almost glows—and yes, we did try that famous gold cappuccino. Honestly? I thought it’d taste weird but it was just good coffee with a shimmer on top. Li laughed when I tried to say “shukran” properly—probably butchered it.

The Heritage Village was quieter than I expected; you can touch old tools and see how people lived before all these skyscrapers. There was this faint smell of spices near one stall—I wish I’d asked what it was. Lunch at Marina Mall was quick (nothing fancy) but sitting by the window watching families shop felt oddly grounding after all that grandeur. We made a short stop at the dates market—sticky-sweet air everywhere—and then ended with a photo stop at Ferrari World (no time for rides though). On the drive back to Dubai, everyone got quiet for a bit—I still think about that view of the mosque against the sky.
