Turkish Cooking Class Istanbul: Cook & Eat a Full Meal
You cook the whole meal yourself, not watch someone else make it.
A hands-on Turkish cooking class in a home kitchen in Besiktas where you prepare a full traditional meal from scratch, then eat it together with your host. You'll cook karnıyarık, sigara böreği, kabak tarator, seasonal salad, and semolina dessert, finishing with Turkish coffee and a fortune reading. The class runs about two and a half hours and accommodates small groups in a relaxed, family-style setting.
The experience
You arrive at a home in Besiktas, a safe neighborhood in Istanbul, and step into a cozy air-conditioned kitchen where your host is ready to cook with you. This is not a demonstration where you watch from the side. You're actively preparing five dishes from scratch: karnıyarık (roasted eggplants stuffed with seasoned ground meat), sigara böreği (crispy pastry rolls with feta and herbs), kabak tarator (a cool zucchini meze with yogurt and walnuts), a seasonal Turkish salad, and İrmik tatlısı, a semolina dessert. Your host walks you through the techniques and traditions behind each dish, and the pace stays relaxed and social.
Once everything is cooked, you sit down together and eat the meal you made, the way a Turkish family would. The experience ends with traditional Turkish coffee, dessert, and an optional coffee fortune reading: a real local custom. A cat and dog live in the home and often join the gathering, adding to the warm, family atmosphere. If you have dietary restrictions or prefer vegetarian or vegan versions of the dishes, your host can adapt the menu when you book.
The class works for beginners and experienced cooks alike, and the two and a half hours fit either a lunch or dinner slot depending on what time you book. Public transportation runs nearby if you need it to get there.
