The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the food—it was the slippers. Lined up by the door, mismatched and soft from years of use. Our host, Fatma, handed me a pair and grinned, waving me into her kitchen where sunlight hit the tiled counter just right. It smelled like onions frying and something sweet I couldn’t place yet. She asked if I liked spicy food and when I nodded, she winked—“We’ll see!” The whole place felt lived-in, like you could spill flour on the floor and nobody would mind.

We started rolling grape leaves for dolma together—my first attempt was lumpy and loose, but Fatma just laughed and fixed it with quick fingers. She told stories about her mother’s kitchen in Mardin while we worked; sometimes she’d pause to show me how to pinch dough for börek or let me taste the filling straight from the bowl (so much mint in there). Her daughter popped in now and then to check our progress or tease us about our slow pace. The radio played old Turkish songs under all our chatter. I didn’t expect to feel so at home so quickly.

By the time we sat down to eat—mezes spread out across the table, carrot salad glistening with yogurt—I realized I’d lost track of time completely. We talked about everything: weddings, neighbors, even what breakfast means in Istanbul (hint: it’s a big deal). There was something comforting about eating what we’d made together, no rush at all. When I tried to pronounce “çörek,” everyone laughed—probably butchered it—but they made me say it again anyway.

I still think about that meal sometimes—the way Fatma squeezed my hand before we left, saying we’d always have a place at her table if we came back to Istanbul. Not sure any restaurant could top that feeling.

What’s included

Your day includes either a homemade Turkish breakfast or dinner depending on your booking time, personalized menu planning based on your preferences, hands-on cooking alongside local moms in their own kitchen, plus plenty of stories and laughter around the table before heading out again into Istanbul’s streets.
