The palace was built where an old cove used to anchor ships, and standing inside you can feel how much weight that history carries—the marble, the scale, the way light moves through the windows. Then you board a yacht at Viaport Marina for the second half. The Bosphorus is 30 kilometers long and separates Europe from Asia, and from the water you see it differently—the Galata Tower, the Maiden's Tower on its tiny island, Rumeli Fortress built in just three months in 1453, the two suspension bridges that carry the city's traffic across.
