The Experience
The boat leaves Viaport Marina and heads up the Bosphorus as the afternoon light starts to shift. You'll pass Dolmabahce Palace, the Second Empire palace of the Ottoman sultans, seen from the water; the Bosphorus Bridge, the first bridge to span the strait; and Maiden's Tower, the natural island fortress in the middle of the channel. The guide points out Küçüksu Palace, the Ottoman hunting lodge built in Baroque and Rococo style, and Rumeli Fortress, the great military stronghold built in 1453 to control the strait. As the sun drops lower, the landmarks begin to light up against the darkening sky — the palaces glow, the bridge spans the water in gold, and the fortress walls catch the first of the evening lights.
The route takes you past the Old City on the European side, where Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace sit on the skyline, and into the Asian side, where you'll see the fanciest residential districts and the military high school built in the final years of Ottoman modernization. Locals line the Bosphorus banks at this hour to watch the same view, so you're seeing what Istanbul residents themselves come for. The Galata Bridge, which connects the old and new city, passes by as well.
Bottled water, snacks, cookies, fruit, coffee, tea and soft drinks are served throughout. The boat has a restroom on board and WiFi. If you book the option with hotel transfer, pickup and return are included; otherwise you make your own way to Viaport Marina. The guide speaks English or Spanish and stays with the group for the full 2.5 hours.

Is this one for you?Book this cruise if you want to see Istanbul's major Ottoman palaces and fortresses from the water at the hour when they're lit and the city's evening lights are coming on — the timing is what makes the landmarks visible and the view complete, rather than a daytime pass through the same sites.
