The day starts at Viaport Marina, where you meet your guide and head into Balat. This neighborhood sits on the European side and holds centuries of layered history—the Ahrida Synagogue, built in the 15th century by Jews from Ohrid, stands as one of Istanbul's oldest and largest. The Yanbol Synagogue, built in the 18th century by migrants from Yambol, Bulgaria, sits nearby. You walk through the Balat Bazaar with its colorful streets and cozy cafés, stop at the famous colorful stairs (a popular photo spot), and pass the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, the Fener Greek Girls' High School with its striking red-brick architecture, and the St. George Cathedral—the center of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and one of the most important places of worship in the Orthodox world. The Sveti Stefan Church, also known as the "Iron Church," is a unique Bulgarian Orthodox structure built entirely of cast iron.

After Balat, you visit Kariye Church for a 1-hour exploration of its historic Byzantine mosaics and frescoes. This 14th-century structure is famous for the detail and condition of its interior decoration, and your guide explains what you're standing in front of. Then you return to Viaport Marina to board the sunset cruise.

The 2-hour cruise departs as the light begins to shift. From the water, you see both the European and Asian sides of Istanbul. The boat passes Dolmabahçe Palace—an Ottoman palace spread across 250,000 square meters on the left bank at the entrance to the Bosphorus—and Çırağan Palace, built in marble and completed in 1871. You pass Ortaköy, a neighborhood on the European shore known for its bazaar and waterfront character, and see the Bosphorus Bridge, the first suspension bridge built across the strait, opened in 1973. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the second bridge, comes into view as you continue north. Rumeli Fortress, constructed in 1453 at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus, sits on the European side; across the water is the Anatolian Fortress, built in 1395. You also see Küçüksu Palace, a small Ottoman summer palace with fine views of the water, and Beylerbeyi Palace, a two-story stone complex built in the 1860s with 6 halls, 24 rooms, a hamam and a garden. The Maiden's Tower, built on a small island about 200 meters from the Uskudar shore, passes by. Cookies, baklava and fruit plates come with drinks during the cruise.
