  • See old Greek houses in Çavuşin
  • Enjoy buffet lunch in Avanos
  • Visit pottery workshop in Avanos
  • Wander Paşabağı Monks Valley

The Experience

The tour starts at Uchisar Castle, the highest rock formation in the region, where the guide explains how Cappadocia's landscape was carved by volcanic activity and erosion over millennia. From there you move to Zelve Open-Air Museum, where 10th and 11th century cave churches and monasteries cut into the rock still hold their painted frescoes of biblical scenes. The guide walks you through the history of Christianity and monastic life in the region before leaving you free to explore the chambers yourself.

In the village of Çavuşin you see the abandoned Greek houses left behind during the 1924 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Then comes lunch in Avanos — a buffet spread of Turkish mezes, salads, meat and vegetarian dishes, and desserts — followed by time in an underground pottery workshop run by a family that has worked clay from the Kızılırmak River for generations. The master potter demonstrates the wheel, and you can try shaping clay yourself if you want to make your own pot; painters and glazers work nearby applying intricate patterns to finished pieces.

Pasabağ, also called Monks Valley for the Chapel of Saint Simeon nestled there, holds clusters of the region's most distinctive rock formations — the multi-headed "fairy chimneys" that rise like mushrooms from the ground. The final stop is Devrent Valley, nicknamed Imagination Valley because its natural rock shapes suggest recognizable objects: a camel, a dolphin, a dog. You wander through and spot what the formations remind you of. The whole route covers the central and northern sites in one arc, with an air-conditioned vehicle and professional guide handling the logistics.

Top questions

What exactly are the fairy chimneys in Pasabağ?

Pasabağ's fairy chimneys are natural rock formations shaped like mushrooms or multi-headed columns, created over millions of years by volcanic eruption and wind and water erosion. The Chapel of Saint Simeon sits among them, which is why the valley is also called Monks Valley.

Can I actually try making pottery at the workshop in Avanos?

Yes, at the family-run pottery workshop in the underground cave, you can have a go at the potter's wheel yourself and make your own pot if you wish. You'll watch the master demonstrate first, then see painters and glazers at work on finished pieces.

What's inside Zelve Open-Air Museum?

Zelve Open-Air Museum holds 10th and 11th century cave churches and monasteries carved into the rock, with painted frescoes depicting biblical scenes still visible on the walls. The guide explains the importance of Christianity and monastic life in Cappadocia, then you explore the chambers at your own pace.

Is lunch included in every option?

Lunch is included only on the Classic Route - All Included option, which offers a buffet of Turkish food in Avanos. The Classic Route - Without Lunch and Classic Route Guide & Transfer options do not include the meal.

How long does the tour take?

The tour runs six to seven hours total, covering five major stops across Cappadocia's central and northern region with transport, guide and stops included.
