Summary

Wander surreal valleys, shape clay in Avanos, climb Uchisar heights

You’ll wander Cappadocia’s wildest valleys, try your hand at pottery with local artisans, explore ancient cave dwellings at Zelve Open-Air Museum, and climb Uchisar Castle for views that linger long after you leave. With a guide who brings stories to life and lunch included, every stop feels personal—like you’re part of something old and ongoing.

experience

What’s the experience like?

First thing I saw was that weird light — the kind you only get in Cappadocia, soft and dusty over the rocks. Our guide, Cem, was already joking about the “Love Valley” shapes before we even got out of the van (he said something about Turkish humor being wasted on sleepy tourists). The air smelled a bit like wild herbs and stone dust. We followed this winding path between those giant pillars — honestly, they look even stranger up close. I tried to take a photo but it never really catches how big or odd it feels standing there.

Later we ended up in Devrent Valley. Cem challenged us to spot animals in the rocks — someone swore they saw a dolphin but I just kept seeing camels everywhere. The wind picked up and you could hear it whistling through gaps in the formations. It’s not quiet exactly, more like a low hum that makes you feel tiny. Then came the pottery workshop in Avanos. The clay was colder than I expected and stuck under my nails for hours (worth it though). One of the potters laughed when I tried spinning the wheel — apparently my “technique” needs work.

I loved Zelve Open-Air Museum most. There’s something about walking into those old cave churches — cool air inside, faded frescoes on crumbly walls — that makes you want to whisper even if no one else is around. Cem told us stories about monks hiding from invaders here; he made history sound like gossip from last week. We climbed Uchisar Castle at the end (my legs still remember those steps), and suddenly all of Cappadocia was laid out below us in that late afternoon haze. I didn’t expect to feel so small or so lucky at the same time.
