The Experience

The day starts with hotel pickup from Göreme, Çavuşin, Avanos, Ortahisar, Ürgüp or Uçhisar, depending on where you're staying. Your guide meets you with the group and heads first to Avanos, the region's center for traditional crafts along the Red River. You'll watch artisans at a pottery workshop using techniques that date back 4,000 years, then see hand-woven Turkish carpets being made at a factory nearby. These stops give you a sense of how Cappadocia's people have worked the land and its materials for centuries.

From there, the route moves into the valleys themselves. Paşabağ (Monks Valley) is the standout—you walk among the famous triple-headed fairy chimneys and see the ancient cave dwellings carved into the rocks where monks once lived. The formations are cone-shaped structures shaped by volcanic activity and erosion over millions of years, and the landscape here is the reason most photographers come to Cappadocia. Zelve Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sits nearby and shows you both the sharp-pointed and wider fairy chimneys in one place. Devrent Valley, also called Imaginary Valley, has no churches or castles—it was never inhabited—but the lunar landscape there is what makes it famous, with rock formations that look like they belong on another planet. Uchisar Castle sits on a hilltop with observation terraces and views across Pigeon Valley, and Çavuşin Village, one of Cappadocia's oldest settlements, lets you see traditional cave homes and the exterior of the Church of St. John the Baptist.
