The Experience
Uçhisar Castle sits 5 kilometers from central Goreme and opens the day with a bird's-eye view of the entire region from its highest point—the only vantage where Cappadocia spreads completely beneath you. From there the route moves to Zelve Open-Air Museum, the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the region, where cave houses, monasteries and churches carved into the rock show how people lived here for centuries. Christianity first took root in these caves, and the museum preserves that layered history across its grounds.
Paşabağ Valley comes next, famous for its mushroom-shaped formations created by wind and rain eroding the soft tuff stone into towering, bulbous shapes. The trail through the valley passes cave dwellings and lets you move at your own pace among the formations. Devrent Valley follows, where the rock shapes suggest animal figures—a giant camel is the first landmark most visitors spot—alongside Roman cemeteries and small churches tucked into the stone. The valley's name means "hole" and "cliff," but the landscape contradicts that spare meaning with formations that draw the eye in every direction.
Avanos is where the tour pauses for pottery. The village has been a center of ceramic production since around 200 BC, and the craft still requires the skill and patience the source material emphasizes. The wooden bridge is Avanos's symbol, and the Red River (Kızılırmak) runs through with a peaceful flow. The day closes in Love Valley, a 4,900-meter stretch lined with vineyards and fruit trees beneath towering fairy chimneys—the formations that define Cappadocia visually and give the valley its romantic reputation.

What is Uçhisar Castle and why does the tour start there?
Uçhisar Castle is a rock formation 5 kilometers from Goreme that rises as the highest point in Cappadocia. It's the only place where you can see the entire region at once from above, which is why the Red Tour opens there—the panorama orients you to everything that follows.
Can I walk through Zelve Open-Air Museum or is it just a drive-by stop?
Zelve Open-Air Museum is an open-air site where you walk among the cave dwellings, monasteries and churches carved into the rock. It's the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Cappadocia and the most important museum in the region, so the tour gives you time to explore the layout.
What are the fairy chimneys and where do I see them?
Fairy chimneys are tall, cone-shaped rock formations created by erosion. You see them throughout the tour, but Paşabağ Valley is where they're most characteristic—the mushroom-shaped ones there are the iconic image of Cappadocia. Devrent Valley and Love Valley also display them prominently.
Do I have to buy lunch and museum tickets separately, or can I add them to the tour?
The tour offers three options: the guided tour alone, a package with lunch added, a package with museum tickets added, or an all-inclusive package that bundles everything together. You choose at checkout which combination suits your budget and interests.
How long is the full Red Tour and what time does it start?
The Red Tour runs approximately 6.5 hours from start to finish. The exact start time depends on your hotel pickup, which is included with the transfer option.
Is there pottery-making instruction in Avanos, or do I just visit the workshops?
The tour includes a stop in Avanos at the pottery workshops, where you see the craft and can watch artisans at work. Pottery-making requires skill and patience, and the village has been a center of ceramic production since around 200 BC. Whether you participate hands-on or observe depends on the workshop and your interest.
