Summary

Fairy chimneys up close, cave homes in Zelve, Avanos pottery and Love Valley views

You’ll climb Uçhisar Castle for wild panoramic views, wander through ancient cave homes at Zelve Museum with your local guide, shape clay in Avanos (or try), and share lunch by the Red River. End your day in Love Valley as sunset lights up the fairy chimneys — it’s more moving than you’d think.

We tumbled out of the van near Uçhisar Castle just as a few sparrows darted overhead — honestly, I wasn’t ready for how wide everything felt. Our guide, Ebru, waved us over to a spot where you could see all of Cappadocia stretching out below. The wind was sharp enough to sting my cheeks but it carried this earthy smell from the rocks. Ebru pointed out old pigeon holes carved into the cliffs — apparently people still use them for fertilizer? I never would’ve guessed.

The walk through Zelve Open-Air Museum was quieter than I expected. You could hear your own footsteps echo inside those cave churches. Ebru told us Christianity first took root here; she even showed us some faded frescoes behind a wire mesh. At one point I touched the wall (probably not allowed) and it felt cool and crumbly, like pressed sand. There were a couple of older women selling dried apricots by the entrance — I bought a handful and they tasted almost smoky.

Paşabağ Valley was next — mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys everywhere, some with windows cut right into them. We tried to guess what animal shapes we saw in Devrent Valley (someone swore one rock looked like a camel but… maybe after two glasses of wine). In Avanos, we watched a pottery master spin clay on his wheel — he let me try and my bowl collapsed instantly. He laughed and said something in Turkish that Ebru translated as “patience makes beauty.” Lunch was simple but good: lentil soup, grilled chicken, bread still warm from the oven. The Red River flowed quietly behind us while we ate.

Love Valley was our last stop. The sun had started dipping low and everything turned gold for about ten minutes — you know that kind of light that makes you want to just stand there and not talk? Even now I can picture those tall stone pillars against the sky. We all got quiet for a bit before heading back to Göreme. I didn’t expect to feel so much just looking at rocks, but here we are.
