The Experience

The tour picks you up from your hotel and moves through five stops without backtracking. Uchisar Castle sits on the highest point in Cappadocia, a hilltop overlooking the town and desert landscape; you'll view it from a panoramic spot rather than climbing to the top. Love Valley follows, named for its 100-foot-tall fairy chimney formations shaped by wind and time. Avanos comes next, a pottery center on the banks of the Kizilirmak—Turkey's longest river—where artisans have worked red clay for over 4,000 years, back to the Hittite period.

Zelve Open-Air Museum is a ninth-century Byzantine monastery carved into the rock, one of the earliest settled and last-abandoned in the region, with the oldest known examples of Cappadocian architecture and religious paintings still visible on its walls. The tour ends at Devrent Valley, also called Imagination Valley, a lunar landscape of rock formations that travelers come to see for the sheer strangeness of the terrain. Throughout the day, a licensed professional guide explains the history and geology of what you're looking at, and the air-conditioned vehicle handles the driving between stops.
