Cook five Tunisian dishes from scratch and eat them together

A hands-on cooking class in Basma Workshops, a traditional Tunisian house over 200 years old in Sousse's Medina, where you learn to make authentic dishes like couscous, kamounia and salade tunisienne while discovering local spices and techniques. The class runs about four and a half hours, includes a short walk through the Medina, coffee on arrival, the meal you cook, and recipe cards to take home. Children from age 4 are welcome, and vegetarian and vegan options are available.

The experience

You start with a short walk through the Medina to reach Basma Workshops, then settle in with coffee while the guide discusses any dietary preferences and helps the group choose a menu. From there, you roll up your sleeves and cook together: preparing starters like salade tunisienne and kafteji, then moving to main courses such as couscous or kamounia, a slow-cooked beef stew with cumin and garlic. The guide teaches you the spice combinations and techniques that define Tunisian cooking as you work, and the whole group shares the meal you've made at a communal table.

This is a shared class, so you'll cook alongside other travelers. Private sessions are available if you book separately. The guide speaks English, French or Arabic. Bottled water and snacks are provided throughout, and you leave with printed recipe cards so you can recreate the dishes at home. The house itself, over 200 years old, is wheelchair accessible, and children from age 4 can join.

What’s included

  • Bottled water and snacks throughout the class.
  • the lunch you cook together.
  • coffee and tea on arrival.
  • printed recipe cards to take home.
