The experience
The tour starts with a pickup in Port of Spain and moves through the city's colonial landmarks before heading north to the coast. You pass the Brian Lara Promenade first, then the Red House, the seat of parliament. Woodford Square comes next: a downtown park laid out in 1817 with a fountain from 1866 and cast iron railings that carry the fleur-de-lis motif from French heraldry. The square has hosted activists raising issues around racism, inequality and labor unrest, and it sits on ground that was once a burial site for the First Peoples and later a place of flogging under British rule. Queen's Park Savannah, the city's largest open space with a 3.5 km perimeter lined with samaan and poui trees, closes the Port of Spain leg.
From there the route heads north about 16 km to Maracas Bay, one of the most scenic drives in Trinidad. The bay stretches for 2 km as a crescent of off-white sand backed by palm trees, with blue-green water and waves averaging 1 meter high: enough for body or board surfing. The beach is known as the lunch spot with an idyllic view and has earned its reputation as the home of bake and shark, the local fried fish sandwich. The expanse is wide enough for sunbathers who want space or for nature lovers who want the sea blast at full force.

What is Woodford Square and why does it matter?
Woodford Square is a downtown park laid out in 1817 by Governor Sir Ralph Woodford on ground that once served as a burial site for the First Peoples and later as a place of punishment under British rule.
