The experience

The hike starts with pickup from your accommodation and a drive to Blanchisseuse Spring Bridge, where the trail begins. On the way, you pass scenic viewpoints of the North Coast and the Caribbean Sea, with stops available for photos. Maracas Bay sits along the route (the most popular beach on the island), and you can pause there if you want. The second beach you'll see, Las Cuevas, passes in view as the drive continues.

Once at the bridge, the walking begins. You'll cross the Marianne River below the Spring Bridge, then move along the coast past Turtle Rock, an impressive formation where the sound of waves crashing against the stone is the main event. The Paria Arch comes next. A large coastal arch you can photograph or simply pass. Then comes the long stretch: roughly 800 meters across the sandy expanse of Paria Bay, a beautiful beach that connects you to the waterfall. The entire hike is an out-and-back route, so you retrace your steps on the way out, which accounts for the 16km total distance.

At Paria Waterfall, you stop for about 30 minutes to swim, take photos and rest before the walk back. On the return drive, roughly an hour, your guide will offer a stop at Maracas Bay to eat bake and shark or other local food (this is optional and at your own cost, though most hikers take it). You'll need to bring your own water and light snacks for the hike itself. Dri-fit athletic wear, proper hiking shoes, sunscreen and bug spray are all recommended. If you plan to swim, bring swimwear and a towel.
