Trinidad Mud Volcano Hike and Swim: Mud Bath and Beach
Jump into a natural mud volcano, then wash off in the warm Caribbean sea
A full-day hiking tour in south Trinidad combines a 45-minute trek through abandoned plantation and forest to a mud volcano, a swim in the mineral-rich clay pool, another 45-minute hike to the coast, and a relaxing swim in calm waters. The tour includes hotel pickup, a professional English-speaking guide, local food tasting, water and snacks; children from age 3 are welcome with an adult.
The Experience
How do you spend a day in Trinidad that leaves you covered in mud and ends with salt water washing it away? This tour strings together two hikes and two swims around the mud volcano itself—the main event. You start with a drive to south Trinidad, where you'll taste East Indian foods and delicacies before heading into the forest. The first 45-minute hike cuts through an abandoned sugar cane plantation and teak forest, a route that moves at a steady pace and requires moderate fitness.
The mud volcano is a large circular pool filled with clay material, and the experience is exactly what it sounds like: you wade in, coat yourself, and float in the cool, mineral-rich water. The clay is said to have rejuvenating properties, and the pool itself is calm enough that you're not fighting currents. After you've had your fill of the mud, you hike another 30 to 45 minutes through the forest to reach the south-west coast. This second hike is the longer stretch of the day, but it leads to calm, warm water where you can rinse off completely and swim without the sensation of sand in every crevice.
The guide handles the route and timing, and hotel pickup is included for selected hotels in the area. You'll want to bring a change of clothes and a towel—the mud washes off, but you'll want to be dry for the drive back. The full day runs about 8 hours from pickup to drop-off, so plan accordingly if you have evening plans.
