The experience
The day starts with a two-hour drive along Trinidad's North Coast Road, climbing through the Northern Range past the Paramin hills and into lush rainforest. A 10-minute stop at the Maracas Lookout gives a view across the Caribbean before you reach Maracas Bay, ringed by coconut palms and forested mountains. The drive continues past the quieter Las Cuevas Bay and through Blanchisseuse village to a small settlement deep in the rainforest, where the hike begins.
The hike itself is easy and flat, following a shallow riverbed for about 45 minutes one way. You walk along and inside the river, moving through the rainforest canopy until the 65-foot waterfall appears ahead with its large plunge pool. The pool is deep enough for swimming, and the waterfall spray creates a natural shoulder massage if you stand beneath it. After time to bathe and rest on the rocks, you hike back to the car park, where basic changing facilities let you rinse off before the return drive.
The tour ends at either Maracas Bay or Las Cuevas Beach, where you can swim again if time allows. Maracas is known for its "Bake & Fish" sandwich: a hot, crispy fish sandwich on homemade bread with a choice of sauces, some very hot. This is sold separately and not included in the tour cost. The full day runs about eight hours from hotel pickup to drop-off.
