The Experience

The morning starts in Port of Spain's downtown, where you drive through Independence Square past the Central Bank and the lively shopping streets, then past the former Parliament Building and historic Woodford Square. From there you move to Queen's Park Savannah, a 200-acre park ringed with exotic trees and the "Magnificent Seven" — colonial mansions with intricate architectural details that line the roundabout. A walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens follows, where you can see tropical trees and plantings without the noise of the city.

Fort George comes next, perched about 236 feet above sea level in the suburb of St James. The panoramic views from the fort sweep across Port of Spain, the Gulf of Paria, and on clear days reach as far as the Venezuelan hills. From there the route climbs the scenic north coast road, passing the Paramin hills with their herb and spice plantations. A stop at the Maracas Lookout gives you time to photograph the surrounding bays and try local snacks from vendors — pineapple chutney and other street food — while you listen for improvised calypso music.

Maracas Beach is lined with coconut trees and opens onto the Caribbean. You have time to swim in the water, walk the sand, or simply sit.
