The experience

The tour starts in Port of Spain with the Magnificent Seven, a collection of Victorian mansions built between the 1800s and 1900s on the western side of Queen's Park Savannah. Stollmeyer's Castle, also called "Killarney," was the first of the seven to be built, constructed in 1904 for entrepreneur Charles Stollmeyer by Scottish architect Robert Gillies, who drew inspiration from Balmoral Castle in Scotland. You'll also visit a memorial park honoring Trinidad and Tobago nationals, Canadians, British and Americans who fell in the World Wars, and a historical museum you can browse at your own pace if it's open. A coconut water tasting rounds out the city portion of the day.

From there, the route climbs through the Northern Range Rainforest on a scenic drive to Maracas Bay, one of the island's most famous beaches. The road itself is the draw here: winding through rainforest with views most visitors miss if they don't make the trip. Once at the beach, you'll have an hour or two to swim, relax or walk the sand. Food comes in the form of a bake and shark sandwich, a local specialty served right on the beach. You cover the cost of your own meal and drinks.

The tour runs five to six hours total and returns to the ship with time to spare. Your guide speaks English and travels with the group throughout. Bring motion sickness medication if you're sensitive to winding roads. The Northern Range has sharp bends and the drive is steep. Dress in smart casual clothes and wear something you don't mind getting wet if you plan to swim.
