The Experience

The first thing I noticed boarding the catamaran at the pier near Phuket was how much calmer it felt than those speedboats you always see zipping by. Our guide, Noi, handed out cold towels and grinned when someone asked if we’d see turtles — “maybe if they’re not too shy today.” The breakfast was simple but fresh, and honestly I was just happy to have coffee in hand as we drifted out. There’s this moment when the mainland fades and it’s just blue everywhere, sun poking through a few clouds. Everyone got quiet for a bit — except the crew, who were already prepping gear and joking in Thai.

Landing at Similan Island No. 8, I could feel that powdery sand under my feet before I even looked up at Sail Rock. The climb wasn’t as tough as I thought (though I did stop halfway to catch my breath — blame the humidity), and the view up there is something that sticks with you. Our photographer caught me mid-squint; I’m still not sure if that’s going on my fridge or not. After wandering along the beach for a while, we headed back for a buffet lunch on deck — lots of Thai dishes, nothing fancy but everything tasted better with salt in the air.

Snorkeling off Payu and Bangu Islands came next. The water really is clear enough to spot parrotfish darting around below you (I lost track of time floating there). The disposable mouthpieces were new to me but made sense. At one point I almost forgot about my mask because I was so distracted by these tiny blue fish flashing past. Back on board, people swapped stories about what they’d seen — someone swore they glimpsed a baby shark, but who knows? By late afternoon we were all sprawled out on deck with fruit and soft drinks, kind of sun-dazed but happy.

I didn’t expect to care about the photos, but looking through them later brought back these little flashes — sunlight on wet skin, laughter from somewhere behind me, Noi showing us how to say “Similan” properly (I butchered it; she laughed). It’s funny how those details stick more than anything else.
