Step-by-step itinerary

Similan Islands snorkeling and beach day

  • Depart early from Khao Lak by speedboat
  • Visit three or four Similan Islands
  • Snorkel among coral reefs and marine life
  • Swim and relax on white sand beaches
  • Enjoy lunch on the beach
  • Return to Khao Lak by speedboat

The experience

You leave your hotel early in the morning and head to the speedboat, which cuts across the Andaman Sea to beat the crowds to the Similans. The islands themselves are uninhabited except for a royal villa on Ko Miang, and what you see from the water, white sand beaches against turquoise shallows, is where you'll spend the day. The speedboat ride itself takes time, but it's the only way to reach these islands and the reason the water stays as clear as it does.

Once you arrive, you enter the water with snorkeling gear provided and spend the day moving between three or four islands depending on the tide. The reefs here hold around 500 species, and the corals (both soft and hard) are what make the Similans famous enough to rank among the world's most beautiful islands. You swim and snorkel at each stop, with time to rest on the beach between sites. Lunch is served on the beach during one of the island visits, so you eat where you've been swimming.

The whole day runs about ten hours from pickup to drop-off. Your guide speaks English and handles the logistics. You bring a copy of your passport for registration and show up ready to be in the water most of the day. The tour includes all entrance fees to the national park, insurance and the use of snorkeling equipment, so there's no separate cost for entry or gear.
