The experience

The class starts at 6 AM sharp with Tong Ling Chi Kung and Walking Meditation, then moves into Shuang Yang (Sun Frost White Crane Soft and Gentle Art), a soft and gentle form refined since the school opened in 2008. Instructors build beginners from day one and push ahead faster for those with prior experience. At 7:50 AM, a break for Chinese tea gives time to discuss training philosophy and strategy. The second half of the session splits by day: Sundays and Thursdays focus on self-defense training, Tuesdays cover Kung Fu techniques like defending and attacking, and Mondays and Fridays are supervised practice on what you've already learned. Group stretching follows at 9 AM, and breakfast is served at 9:15 AM.

The retreat's kitchen gardens and orchards supply the breakfast table with fresh, organic food collected the same morning. Vegan and vegetarian options are always available. Meat is served on Sunday mornings only. You have access to filtered water throughout, and the gym stays open with equipment including the general's pole, punch bags, kicking dummies, weights, parallel bars, chin-up bars and gymnastics rings for practice outside class time.
