The experience

The program has been refined since 2008 to pack the best elements of Chinese Kung Fu, Chi Kung, and meditation into sessions that deliver what most students actually want: better strength, clearer thinking, and a calmer body. Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early. The instructors size up where you are on day one (whether you've never thrown a punch or you've trained before), and calibrate the pace accordingly. Beginners get a strong foundation from the start. Those with experience move faster.

What you train changes by day. Sunday afternoons cover defense against weapons followed by traditional weapons training. Monday is a masterclass on one theme: Stance and Stability, Abdominal Breathing, Developing the Face and Senses, or Springy Internal Power. Tuesday focuses on Kung Fu fighting applications. Friday is kicking and striking techniques or block breaking. The gym is equipped with the general's pole, punch bags, kicking dummies, weights, parallel bars, chin-up bars, and gymnastics rings. Lessons finish at 6pm, when dinner is served: kitchen gardens and orchards provide fresh, organic food. Vegan and vegetarian options are available, and meat is served Thursdays only.

Bring a water bottle. Filtered water is available at the tap. Afternoon tea is included. You'll need at least a moderate level of physical fitness to keep up with the class. Training uniforms are optional. Wear what lets you move.
