The experience

Kingstone Asilia sits in the green, peaceful outskirts of Arusha, and the morning starts with the history of coffee in Tanzania and how it arrived there. Depending on the season, you'll plant a small coffee seedling in the plantation, then walk to the mature trees to pick ripe coffee cherries until your basket is full. The guide shows you traditional Tanzanian medicinal plants along the way and tells the stories of how they're used.

The processing happens with equipment the farm still uses: you'll operate the hand-powered pulping machine to strip the pulp from the cherries, then pound pre-dried beans with a song and dance to remove the outer layer. After that comes the roasting and grinding, and you'll brew a cup of coffee you made yourself, served with a traditional Tanzanian snack. The whole sequence takes about four hours and moves at the pace of the work, not a schedule.

Lunch is a home-cooked vegetarian buffet prepared by the farm's own chef with ingredients bought that morning at the market or picked from the farm. You may also get the chance to try local banana beer if you want to. Public transportation options are available nearby if you're arranging your own way there. Pickup from your hotel can be added for an extra $15.
