The experience

The coffee village sits 40 minutes outside Arusha at 1,400 meters, and the walk starts from the center on foot. You pass through small farms, schools and churches on the way to the organic farm, and your guide carries information about local culture and traditions as you go. The farm itself shows you how organic production differs from the traditional method: no chemicals sprayed on the trees, which means the farmer stays safer and the coffee tastes cleaner when it reaches your cup.

A 30- to 40-minute walk down to the roastery brings you to the garden where lunch happens: hot Tanzanian food with chapati, roasted banana, rice, ugali, goat sauce, spinach, salad and seasonal fruit. For dessert you cup different coffees alongside banana cake and chocolate-covered coffee beans, tasting how the roast changes the flavor. The roastery sits in the same garden, so the last part of the coffee journey, from bean to cup, unfolds where you eat.

The afternoon moves into the showroom, where you find your favorite roast and take a bag home. The farm is all organic and Fairtrade, which means the farmers earn three times the normal price for their coffee instead of a payment too low to send their children to school. The trip runs about six and a half hours from Arusha, and private transportation is included in the booking.
