The experience
The tour runs five to eight hours and moves through Arusha's cultural and natural landmarks in a single day. You start at the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre, where art and crafts tell the region's history through Tanzanite work and other traditional pieces. From there, the Shanga Shanga Foundation workshop shows how artisans with disabilities create handmade products from recycled materials. You can watch the process and buy directly. The Arusha Declaration Museum holds a 600-year-old giant tortoise and specimens of the region's flora, fauna and geology, giving you a sense of what the land holds beyond the city.
The Maasai Market is where you browse traditional clothing, jewelry and crafts made by Maasai people and other local artisans. The Tanzanite Experience museum is the final stop: a guide walks you through a 20-minute documentary on Tanzanite mining and cutting, shows you the laboratory methods and rough versus finished stones, and gives you the chance to shop if a piece catches your eye. Private transportation moves you between all five stops, and lunch is included partway through the day.
