The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro Airport and a scenic drive to the Last village, the gateway to Kilimanjaro National Park. A local guide meets you there and leads a short walk through lush vegetation, banana farms and small communities before the trail opens onto Materuni Waterfalls. The hike is moderate. You move through rainforest and farmland at an easy pace, with time to stand in front of the waterfall and feel the mountain air before heading back down.
Once back in the village, you move into the coffee experience. Local farmers show you how Tanzanian coffee grows, gets harvested, and is traditionally roasted over a fire. You take part in the process (roasting beans, grinding them by hand), and then drink a cup you've just made. A fresh local lunch follows, prepared in the village and eaten with the community. This is where the pace slows further. There's time to sit, talk, and absorb the hospitality without rushing.
In the late afternoon, you drive to Ewangwani Maasai Village. Here the focus shifts to everyday life and traditions. You visit traditional homes, watch how fire is made the old way, see beadwork up close, and hear stories about livestock and village customs from the people who live them. The interaction is conversational. You ask questions, listen, and move at a rhythm that feels natural rather than choreographed. After the village, your guide drives you back to your hotel or airport, carrying views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days and a sense of how people actually live in this part of Tanzania.
