The experience
You start with a hike through Materuni, an authentic Chagga tribal village 15 kilometers from Moshi. The trail to the waterfalls takes about 40 minutes and can be muddy: good hiking boots matter here. The waterfall itself drops more than 80 meters into a pool deep enough for swimming. On clear days, you can see Kilimanjaro's summit from the trail. After your swim, you return to the village for a traditional Chagga lunch and a taste of local banana beer, brewed by some of Tanzania's finest brewers.
The coffee experience happens next at a working farm where you learn how beans are cultivated, dried, roasted and processed. You'll help grind the coffee by hand, a task traditionally accompanied by Chagga songs and dances. Before leaving, you taste what you made and take in views of the surrounding rainforest from the farm.
The drive to Kikuletwa Hot Springs takes about an hour and 20 minutes over partly rough terrain. Once there, the afternoon is yours to shape: swim in the warm water, rest in the sun, chat at the small bar, or simply float. You leave before sunset and return to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Bring swimwear and a towel for both the waterfall and the hot springs.
