Step-by-step itinerary
Waterfall, coffee tour, and hot springs
- Walk to Materuni Waterfall pool
- Swim at the waterfall pool
- Enjoy local packed lunch
- Visit Kikuletwa Hot Springs
- Swim at Kikuletwa Hot Springs
The experience
Materuni sits 15km from Moshi town, the last village before Kilimanjaro National Park, and the waterfall there is the biggest in the northern region. The walk to the pool at its base takes 40 minutes through flora and fauna, and the water is cold enough to refresh after the hike. Before moving on, you eat a packed lunch prepared by a local family, not a restaurant meal, but food made in someone's home.
The coffee tour happens on the plantation itself, where you learn how the Chagga tribe grows and processes the beans. This is not a demonstration. You're on the working land where it actually happens. After lunch and the waterfall, the drive to Kikuletwa Hot Springs takes about an hour. The springs bubble up from underground in the middle of semi-arid landscape, ringed by sprawling fig trees, and the water is clear enough to see through. A swim here is the payoff after the morning's walk and the coffee work.
Your guide arrives for pickup at your hotel and speaks one of five languages. Bottled water, soft drinks and a snack travel with you. The tour runs 10 hours total, which means it fills most of a day but leaves the early morning or late evening free depending on your hotel location and the pickup time you choose.

Is this one for you?At 10 hours, the tour claims most of your day, so book it when you have a full day free in Moshi rather than trying to fit it around other activities. Children from age 5 can join, and the walk to the waterfall is moderate, so families and mixed fitness groups travel together without splitting up.
