The Experience
You start with hotel pickup in Moshi and a drive to Nale Moru village at 1,950 meters, where the trail begins through maize fields and pine forest. The first day's walk runs 3 to 4 hours, climbing gradually to Simba Camp at 2,650 meters with views opening over the Kenyan plains. The route follows the north side of the mountain, which sees far fewer trekkers than the busier southern approaches, and the itinerary builds in time to acclimatize: after reaching Kikelelwa Caves on day two, day three is a shorter walk of 3 to 4 hours to Mawenzi Tarn Hut at 4,330 meters, with an afternoon walk to about 4,500 meters to help your body adjust to altitude.
Day four crosses the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo — the mountain's two highest peaks — through a lunar desert landscape, arriving at Kibo Hut at 4,700 meters. The summit attempt begins around 1am on day five: you trek by torchlight up a steep path, reaching Gilman's Point at 5,685 meters in time for sunrise over Mawenzi, then continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the roof of Africa. The descent back to Kibo Hut takes 5 to 6 hours, followed by a rest and brunch before you drop down to Horombo Hut at 3,720 meters. The final day is a 5-hour walk through forest on good paths down to Marangu Gate, where a driver meets you for the transfer back to Moshi.
The operator provides all camping equipment, so you don't carry a tent, and the crew salary is included in the price. Accommodation is at established campsites with basic facilities; park fees and airport transfers from Moshi are covered. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness — the altitude and the long summit day (10 to 16 hours of walking) demand it — and the climb is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or during pregnancy.
What’s included
- Camping equipment and accommodation at all five campsites.
- English-speaking guide.
- all Kilimanjaro National Park fees.
- hotel pickup and airport transfers in Moshi.
- crew salary.

Is this one for you?The six-day schedule means you spend most of a week on the mountain, which allows the route to climb at a pace that favors acclimatization over speed — useful if you want the best chance of reaching the summit without rushing. If you prefer a shorter climb or a faster ascent, a different route or operator may suit you better.

What is the Rongai Route and why is it different from other Kilimanjaro trails?
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, the quieter side of the mountain where far fewer trekkers climb. The original route from the border village of Rongai was closed years ago, so today's climbers follow what is also called the Loitokitok Route or Nalemuru Route — all names for the same northern path. It's the only major route that ascends from the north, making it less crowded than the southern and western approaches.
How much walking happens each day, and what is the summit day like?
Days one through four involve 3 to 7 hours of walking at a steady pace, gaining altitude gradually. Day five is the summit attempt: you start around 1am, trek by torchlight for 5 to 6 hours to Gilman's Point at 5,685 meters to watch sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. The descent takes another 5 to 6 hours down to Kibo Hut, then you walk to Horombo Hut — the overall day runs 10 to 16 hours of walking. Day six is a 5-hour descent through forest to the gate.
What camping equipment and accommodation do I get?
The operator provides all camping gear, so you don't need to bring or rent a tent. You sleep at five established campsites — Simba Camp, Kikelelwa Caves, Mawenzi Tarn Hut, Kibo Hut and Horombo Hut — with basic facilities at each. Hotel pickup in Moshi is included, as is the transfer back after you descend.
What altitude will I reach, and how does the route handle acclimatization?
The route climbs to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. Acclimatization is built into the schedule: day three is a shorter walk to Mawenzi Tarn Hut at 4,330 meters, followed by an afternoon walk to about 4,500 meters to help your body adjust before the push higher. The gradual ascent over six days and the time spent at altitude before the summit attempt improve your chances of reaching the top.
Do I need special fitness or experience to climb this route?
You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The climb is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or during pregnancy. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The altitude and the long summit day demand preparation, but the route does not require mountaineering experience — it is a trekking climb, not a technical one.
What is included in the price, and what do I need to arrange separately?
The operator includes camping equipment, accommodation at all five campsites, park fees, crew salary, airport transfers from Moshi, and an English-speaking guide. You do not pay separately for those. Gratuities, international flights, visas, and alcohol or soft drinks are not included and are your responsibility.
