Walk through five ecosystems to Africa's highest peak

The Machame Route is a 6-day trek up Mount Kilimanjaro from Moshi, Tanzania, climbing from rainforest through alpine meadow to the crater rim and summit at 19,345 feet. The extra day built into this route—compared to shorter alternatives—lets your body acclimatize as you gain elevation, which is why the success rate here is higher than on faster trails. A live guide leads the trek; camping equipment, meals and bottled water are provided.

The Experience

The drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate takes 50 minutes, passing through the village of Machame on the mountain's lower slopes. From the gate, you walk into rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge—the lower sections are muddy and slippery, so trekking poles and gaiters help. After 5 to 7 hours of hiking, you reach Machame Camp at 9,400 feet. The next day climbs steeply through heather-covered ridges to Shira Camp at 12,500 feet, a 4- to 6-hour push that leaves the forest behind.

Day three is the acclimatization day that matters most. You climb to the Lava Tower (called the "Shark's Tooth") at 13,000 feet, then descend to Barranco Camp at the same elevation you started—a technique that lets your body adjust to thin air while you rest and recover. The following day is long: you cross the Barranco Wall, pass through Karanga Valley, and reach Barafu Camp at 15,300 feet, completing the South Circuit with views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. From here, the summit is one push away.

Summit day starts between midnight and 2am. You climb through loose scree between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers toward Stella Point on the crater rim—18,600 feet, the most physically demanding stretch of the trek. If weather holds, you'll see sunrise from Stella Point or from Uhuru Peak itself, the continent's highest point at 19,345 feet. The descent is long: you drop to Barafu for lunch, then continue down to Mweka Hut. On the final day, a 3- to 4-hour walk through rainforest takes you to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate, then a vehicle returns you to Moshi.

  • Camping at all five mountain camps with all equipment provided.

Is this one for you?Summit day starts between midnight and 2am and involves 5 kilometers of steep scree climbing in thin air—this route demands a moderate level of physical fitness and mental toughness. The six-day structure and the acclimatization day in Karanga Valley are what make the success rate higher than faster alternatives, so book this one if you want time to adjust rather than a sprint to the top.

Top questions

How does the Machame Route compare to other Kilimanjaro trails?

The Machame Route is longer than the Marangu Route at six days instead of five, and guides regard it as more challenging, but the extra time for acclimatization makes the success rate higher. Many guides also consider it the most enjoyable route on the mountain.

What time do we start climbing on summit day?

Summit day begins between midnight and 2am from Barafu Camp. You climb toward Stella Point on the crater rim in darkness, aiming to reach it by sunrise—faster hikers may see the sunrise from Uhuru Peak itself.

What's included in the trek, and what do I need to bring?

The trek includes camping equipment, all meals, bottled water, and a live English-speaking guide. You need to bring your own trekking poles, gaiters, warm layers, rain gear and personal toiletries; the operator recommends advising any dietary requirements at booking.

What is the Lava Tower day for?

Day three climbs to the Lava Tower at 13,000 feet, then descends back to Barranco Camp at the same elevation. This "climb high, sleep low" technique is crucial for acclimatization and prepares your body for the final push to the summit.

Is there a minimum group size?

A minimum of two people per booking is required to operate the trek.

What happens after we reach the summit?

After reaching Uhuru Peak, you descend the same day to Mweka Hut, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The final morning is a 3- to 4-hour walk down through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate before a vehicle drives you back to Moshi.
