The experience

We climbed aboard the Israel King II just after breakfast: still sticky from sunscreen and half-awake. The captain, Marcus, grinned as he untied us from Rodney Bay Marina, shouting something to a friend onshore I couldn’t quite catch. The engine started up and suddenly we were skimming along the west coast of St Lucia, salt spray hitting my lips. The island looked different from out here: lush green cliffs sliding into blue water, fishing boats bobbing near tiny villages. I tried to count how many shades of green there were but gave up pretty quickly.

Marcus pointed out Gros Piton as we got closer to Soufriere. He said it’s even better from the water, and he was right. It’s just… massive. We stopped at Anse Chastanet for snorkeling (I’m not exactly graceful with fins), but the water was so clear I could see little flashes of yellow fish darting past my mask. There was this faint smell of grilled fish drifting over from shore, someone’s lunch already started, maybe? My partner tried rum punch for the first time. She coughed and then laughed so hard she almost dropped her cup.

I liked that nothing felt rushed. We swam near the Pitons until our fingers wrinkled, and then just sat on deck letting our towels dry in the sun while Marcus told us about growing up in Castries: his uncle still fishes those waters. On the way back we drifted into Marigot Bay for a bit. The light was softer by then, boats rocking gently at their moorings, and I remember thinking I’d never seen water that color before: almost like glass with a hint of green. I still think about that view sometimes when things get loud back home.
