The Experience

We pushed off from the dock just as the sun started to warm up Marigot Bay — not too hot yet, but you could already smell salt in the air. Our captain, Marcus, grinned and handed us cold Piton beers (it was barely 10am but honestly, who’s counting on vacation?). He started telling stories about old movie shoots here — I think he said Dr. Doolittle? — and pointed out some fancy villas hidden in the trees. The water was that deep blue you only see in postcards. I kept thinking how different it felt to move along St Lucia’s coast this way, no crowds or loudspeakers, just us and the hum of the engine.

We stopped at Anse Cochon first for snorkeling — I’m not much of a swimmer but they had floaties for people like me. The reef was right there: little purple fish darting around my ankles and these weird spiky things clinging to rocks (sea urchins maybe?). When I got back on board my skin tasted salty and my hair was a mess. Marcus passed around more rum punch and we drifted past fishing villages painted in colors that looked almost too bright against the green hills. He told us about his cousin who still fishes here every morning; made me wish I could try it once.

The Pitons came into view suddenly — one minute you’re looking at palm trees, next thing these huge peaks are right there in front of you. We must’ve taken fifty photos between us but honestly none of them do it justice. In Soufriere we had the option to go to Sulphur Springs for mud baths (the sulfur smell is...intense) or just wander town for a bit. I tried saying “thank you” in Kweyol and totally butchered it — Marcus laughed so hard he almost dropped his phone.

On the way back we stopped at Anse Chastanet Beach for one last swim. Black sand gets hot fast! There were only a few other people around so it felt like our own secret spot. The light was all golden by then and someone played soca music quietly from their phone. I still think about that feeling — floating in warm water with nowhere else to be.
