The Experience

"You hear that? That’s the bats," our guide grinned as we drifted past a shadowy cave near Soufriere. I’d never heard bats like that before — kind of squeaky but not scary, just part of the soundtrack here. The day started with us piling onto a boat in Castries, sun already warming up my shoulders, and by the time we reached Marigot Bay I’d lost count of how many shades of green were sliding past. The crew pointed out fishing boats bobbing near Anse La Raye — one guy waved back, holding up a snapper like he was showing off a trophy.

The Pitons came into view all at once, just these two massive shapes cutting into the sky. I didn’t expect them to feel so close or so… solid? We stopped at Sugar Beach for a swim (I forgot how salty Caribbean water tastes until it hit my lips) and tried snorkeling — saw more fish than I could name. My mask kept fogging up but honestly I didn’t care. After that, we hopped into a van for Sulphur Springs Park. The air there smelled like eggs (not gonna lie) but slathering on that warm mineral mud was weirdly fun. Our driver said locals swear by it for your skin — can’t say if it worked but I felt lighter after rinsing off under the open sky.

Lunch was this casual spot in Soufriere — spicy chicken stew with something called callaloo (Li laughed when I tried to say it right). People just talked across tables like they knew each other forever. Then Toraille Waterfall: cold water pounding down so hard it felt like a massage you didn’t ask for but secretly needed. On the way back along the coast, we passed Lover’s Rock where some kids were daring each other to jump off — one actually did it while his friends cheered from below. That view sticks with me; maybe because everything felt so alive and unfiltered here.
