Private St. Lucia Boat Tour: Snorkeling at the Pitons
Anchor your day around two volcanic peaks and the reef life between them
This is a private boat tour departing from Anse La Raye on the west coast of St. Lucia, where you snorkel the coral reefs surrounding the Pitons—the island's UNESCO-listed volcanic peaks—with a local guide who has spent a lifetime on these waters. The tour runs five hours and includes snorkeling equipment, bottled water, soda and homemade rum punch; pickup is available, and children from age 5 are welcome. You choose between two boats: the 37-foot Dakota or the 28-foot Bowen.
Step-by-step itinerary
Boat tour with snorkeling and sightseeing
- Pass by beautiful Caribbean bay
- Pass by Anse La Raye fishing village
- Explore the Pitons Mountains area
- Snorkel among vibrant coral reefs
The Experience
The boat leaves from Anse La Raye, a working fishing village on the west coast where small boats still move along the bay the way they have for generations. From there, the route takes you past Soufrière Bay—the anchorage used for Hollywood film backdrops—and toward the Pitons themselves: two massive volcanic plugs that rise straight out of the water and hold the island's most significant landmark. The coral reefs that blanket the marine area around them are home to dozens of fish species moving through water so clear the depth is almost disorienting.
Snorkeling happens in the shallow reef zones where the color concentration is highest—the corals shift through reds, yellows and purples, and the fish move in schools dense enough that you stop counting. All equipment is provided, and the guide stays in the water with you, pointing out the species and the reef structure as you move. The five-hour window gives you time in the water without rushing the boat ride or the stops along the way.
Between water time, you'll have soda, bottled water and homemade rum punch on board. The boat itself is the choice you make at checkout: the Dakota is 37 feet and carries more people comfortably; the Bowen is 28 feet and smaller. Both are operated by the same family, and both follow the same route and inclusions. The guide speaks English and French, and the operation is built around flexibility—if the conditions or your interests shift, the family adjusts rather than sticking to a script.

Operated by The Real Deal Boat Tours
Is this one for you?Choose the 37-foot Dakota if you're traveling with a group or prefer more deck space and stability on the water; pick the 28-foot Bowen if you want a smaller, more intimate boat with the same guide, route and snorkeling time. Both boats leave from Anse La Raye and follow the same five-hour itinerary, so the choice is about the boat experience itself, not the reef or the Pitons you'll see.

What are the Pitons and why are they the main stop on this tour?
The Pitons are two volcanic peaks rising directly from the sea off the coast of St. Lucia, and they're the island's most significant landmark—named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The coral reefs surrounding them cover more than half of the marine area and hold dozens of fish species, which is why they're the center of the snorkeling on this tour.
How much time do I actually spend snorkeling versus traveling on the boat?
The full tour is five hours, which includes the boat ride from Anse La Raye to the Pitons, time snorkeling in the reef zones, and the return. The guide controls the pace and can adjust based on conditions and your comfort level in the water.
What's included in the price, and what do I need to bring?
Snorkeling equipment, bottled water, soda and homemade rum punch are all included. Pickup is available as part of your booking option. Bring a towel, sunscreen and a change of clothes; the guide will tell you what else depending on the weather and sea conditions on your departure day.
What's the difference between the Dakota and the Bowen boats?
The Dakota is 37 feet and the Bowen is 28 feet. Both follow the same route and include the same guide, equipment and refreshments. The Dakota carries more people and offers more deck space; the Bowen is smaller and more intimate. You choose which one at checkout.
Can children go on this tour, and is there anything I should know about bringing them?
Children are welcome from age 5 and up. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and infants must sit on an adult's lap. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, though the operator does not recommend it for pregnant travelers.
Who operates this tour, and what makes it different from other boat tours in St. Lucia?
The Real Deal Boat Tours is owned and operated by a St. Lucian family, and the guide is someone who has spent a lifetime on these waters. Because it's family-run, the operation can adapt to your interests and pace rather than following a fixed script—the flexibility and local knowledge are what set it apart.
