The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel or the cruise port, then moves through Basseterre's colonial landmarks — Independence Square (laid out like a Union Jack), the Berkeley Memorial from 1883, and the stone churches that line the streets. The minivan carries you past Bloody Point, where the Massacre of the Kalinago took place, and on to Wingfield Estate, where 17th-century Amerindian petroglyphs carved into rock remain among the finest examples in the Lesser Antilles. The estate itself spans 8 acres of lush rainforest foothills and once processed sugar cane for 350 years before becoming an archaeological site and gardens.

Romney Manor comes next, home to Caribelle Batik and a Saman tree over 400 years old that covers half an acre — the largest living organism on the island. From there the route climbs to Brimstone Hill Fortress, the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Caribbean. The fortress was built intermittently between the 1690s and 1790s from stone quarried on site and mortar made from limestone; its polygonal-style citadel is one of the earliest surviving examples of that fortification design. The hilltop sits nearly 800 feet high and opens onto panoramic views of forested mountains, cultivated fields, Sandy Point township, and the neighboring Dutch, English and French islands across the sea.

The Black Rocks, lava formations on the northeastern coast near Saddlers, come from Mount Liamuiga's volcanic flows. The tour ends at Timothy Hill, a lookout on the southeast peninsula where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea, with views across to Nevis in the distance. Transport, guide and all stops are included; the minivan is air-conditioned and the pace allows time at each site without rushing.
