You'll pass the Berkeley Memorial fountain (imported from Scotland in 1883 and still working), Independence Square in downtown Basseterre, and the sites that shaped the island's history: Bloody Point, where over 2,000 Kalinago people were massacred by European colonists; Wingfield Estate, a water-powered sugar plantation; and an old rum distillery that was buried for centuries until heavy rain exposed it. The guide points out the details locals know — the road named after Kim Collins, who won the 100-meter dash at the 2003 World Championships, and the spot where the Atlantic and Caribbean seas meet.

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park anchors the middle of the day. Built by the British in the 17th and 18th centuries and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fortress sits high on a steep hill with views across St. Kitts and neighboring islands. You'll walk the old cannons, stone walls and historic buildings while the guide explains the colonial past and the enslaved Africans whose labor built it. From there the route moves to Timothy Hill, where you can meet and photograph the island's green vervet monkeys and look out over Frigate Bay from above.

Beach time at Frigate Bay comes near the end. You can swim, relax on the sand or walk into Inon's beach bar where locals gather — the choice is yours.
