The Experience

That’s how our Basseterre plantation tour started — not with a fact, but with a question from our guide, Winston, as we wound along the northwest coast. The air was thick with salt and something sweet I couldn’t quite place (maybe those wildflowers by the road). We passed kids waving from porches and goats that looked like they owned the place. Winston pointed out Romney Manor before we even saw it — “That’s where history hides in plain sight,” he said. I liked that.

Romney Manor is all green shade and old stone walls, and I kept touching the rough bark of this giant saman tree (Winston said it’s over 400 years old). Inside, you can almost hear stories in the floorboards — or maybe that was just me being dramatic. Timothy Hill is a strange kind of beautiful — windy, loud with birds, and so bright you have to squint.
