The experience

The tour starts from your hotel or Port Zante and heads along the island's main road toward Basseterre, where the guide walks you through the city's colonial past (Piccadilly Circus, Independence Square, the War Memorial) pointing out the architecture that marks the French and British periods. The narration covers the island's parliamentary system, culture and the evidence of African heritage woven through the streets and landmarks.

From Basseterre, the route moves to Romney Manor, a 400-year-old sugar plantation set within the rainforest with structures still standing from centuries past. You browse the grounds at your own pace, see how sugar was produced four hundred years ago, and get a free tasting of the original molasses rum made on site. Next door is Caribelle Batik, where a demonstration shows how batik (an Indonesian-style art printed on 100% cotton) has been done on the island for over fifty years. You walk through the botanical garden and can buy batik pieces at the shop.

The final stop is Brimstone Hill Fortress, an 800-foot stone structure built by the British in the 17th and 18th centuries and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The fort is well preserved with museums, barracks and artifacts open for viewing. The vantage point offers photographic views of the surrounding islands, St. Eustatius, Saba, St. Maarten and Anguilla. Timothy Hill, a scenic overlook of the Atlantic and Caribbean with views toward Nevis, is also part of the route, and there's time for shopping at local vendors for souvenirs.
