Step-by-step itinerary
Full day safari at Yala National Park
- Enter Yala National Park
- Search for Sri Lankan leopards
- Spot elephants near permanent lakes
- Observe wildlife throughout the park
- Exit Yala National Park
The experience
Yala National Park is where the Sri Lankan leopard is most reliably sighted in the country, and a private vehicle gives you the flexibility to linger at sightings and adjust your route based on where guides spot movement. You start with breakfast, then spend the day driving the park's network of roads and tracks, stopping to watch for leopards in the trees and elephants moving between grazing areas. The guide navigates to permanent lakes inside the park where wildlife congregates, especially during dry periods when animals cluster around water. Bottled water and snacks travel with you. Lunch is included partway through the day.
A full-day format (10 to 12 hours from pickup to return) means you cover more ground than a half-day trip and catch animals during multiple active periods. The private setup keeps your group small and lets the driver respond to sightings without waiting for other vehicles. Hotel pickup is included, and the guide speaks English throughout.

Is this one for you?A private vehicle is the format here, which means your guide can hold position at leopard sightings and adjust the route based on where animals are moving, rather than following a fixed itinerary with other groups. Choose this if you want flexibility to spend time with wildlife when you find it, and if you prefer a smaller group than a shared safari would bring.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the best time of year to see elephants at Yala?
Elephants are visible year-round at Yala, but during dry periods they concentrate around the permanent lakes inside the park, making them easier to locate. When rainfall is regular, herds spread across the park and roam in plain sight along the main roads.
How much time do we actually spend driving versus stopped for wildlife?
The full 10 to 12 hour day includes driving, stopping for sightings, and the lunch break. Most of that time is spent on the roads and at viewing points where the guide positions the vehicle for leopard and elephant spotting.
Is Yala really the best place in Sri Lanka to see a leopard?
Yala National Park has the highest density of Sri Lankan leopards anywhere in the country, which is why it's the most visited and most famous safari park in Sri Lanka. If seeing a leopard is your priority, Yala offers the best possible chance.
What happens if we don't see a leopard?
Leopards are wild animals and sightings are never guaranteed, but Yala's high leopard density means encounters are far more likely here than elsewhere in Sri Lanka. Elephant sightings are very likely regardless.
Do we need any special fitness level for a full-day safari?
The safari is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You spend most of the day seated in the vehicle, though the tour is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health or pregnant travelers.
