- Spot Sri Lankan leopards and elephants
- Observe sloth bears and bird species
- Visit historical sites within the park
The experience
You're picked up from your hotel on the southern coast and driven to Yala National Park's entrance, where the safari begins. The guide navigates the park in a Toyota Hilux jeep, moving through dense jungles and open grassland as you scan for wildlife. Sri Lankan leopards are the draw (the park holds the world's densest population of them), but the morning and afternoon light also bring out elephants moving across the plains, sloth bears in the undergrowth, and dozens of bird species. The jeep stops at vantage points and lagoon edges where animals gather, and the guide shares details about the park's ecosystems and the behavior of what you're seeing.
The tour runs six to seven hours and includes breakfast before or during the drive, bottled water, and binoculars so you don't miss the smaller movements in the trees. Bookings of four passengers or more travel as a private group in your own jeep. Smaller parties may share. The route ends with a transfer onward to Ella, so the safari fits into a single day of travel rather than requiring a separate trip.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 11 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.
Can I really see leopards in Yala, or is spotting them rare?
Yala National Park has the world's highest concentration of Sri Lankan leopards, so sightings are far more likely here than in other parks. The guide knows where they move through the jungles and plains, and the early morning and late afternoon hours when the tour runs are when they are most active. There's no guarantee on any safari, but the odds are genuinely strong.
What other animals will I see besides leopards?
Sri Lankan elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, wild boar, and over 200 bird species live in the park. You'll also pass through lagoon areas where waterfowl gather. The guide points out tracks and behavior, so you learn to spot signs of animals even when they're not directly visible.
Do I need to buy the park entrance ticket in advance, or is it included?
The entrance ticket is not included and must be purchased at the gate when you arrive. The guide will direct you to the ticket office, and the cost is paid separately on the day of the tour.
Is the jeep comfortable for a six-to-seven-hour day?
The Toyota Hilux is an open-sided safari jeep, so you have clear sightlines for photography and wildlife spotting. The vehicle is built for rough park terrain, and the guide manages the pace and stops so you're not sitting continuously. Breakfast is included, and bottled water is provided throughout.
What's the difference between the three departure options?
You choose your starting point based on where you're staying: Galle or Unawatuna, Mirissa or Weligama, or Tangalle or Hiriketiya. The safari itself is the same. The transfer time to Yala varies slightly depending on which coastal town you depart from. All three routes end in Ella.
