Step-by-step itinerary
Wildlife safari in Yala National Park

- Explore dense jungles and open plains
- Spot Sri Lankan leopards
- Observe elephants and birdlife
- Visit coastal shores and lagoons
The experience
Yala National Park sits in southeastern Sri Lanka and operates as a working wildlife reserve where leopard sightings are far more likely than at most parks on earth. The tour runs through diverse terrain (dense jungles give way to open grassland and lagoons), and the guide navigates based on animal movement and recent sightings rather than a fixed route. You travel in a luxury safari jeep with binoculars provided, and the driver knows where to position the vehicle for the best views without disturbing the animals. Bookings of four passengers or more run as private tours in your own jeep. Smaller groups share a jeep with a maximum of six people total.
The tour operates in morning, evening and full-day formats, each timed to when animals are most active. A 4-hour private option works for travelers with limited time, while the 7-hour morning safari and 5-hour evening safari let you choose when to go. The full-day special combines both periods and covers more ground. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, and the driver speaks English throughout. Bring sunscreen and wear neutral colors that blend into the landscape. The jeep has no roof, so you're exposed to sun and wind but also have an unobstructed view in every direction.
National Park entrance tickets are not included and can be purchased at the gate on arrival. The tour suits travelers with at least a moderate level of physical fitness, as the jeep bounces over unpaved terrain and you'll be seated for extended periods. Children from age 5 are welcome. The operator does not recommend this tour for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnant travelers.
