The Experience

I didn’t think I’d ever be awake at 4am on purpose, but there we were—Negombo still half-asleep, our driver grinning as he waved us into the van. The air smelled a bit salty and damp, kind of like old leaves after rain. It took a while to get to Wilpattu (I dozed off a bit), but by the time we stopped just outside the park for breakfast, I was wide awake. Eating rice and coconut sambol out of a paper packet with birds making weird calls overhead—honestly, that’s not how I usually start my days.

Our guide, Sunil, had this way of pointing things out without making it feel like a lesson. “Look there—see the paw print?” he said at one point, and I nearly missed it because it was so faint in the red dust. The jeep bounced a lot more than I expected (bring something soft to sit on if you can), but that’s part of it. We saw water buffaloes just standing around like they owned the place, and once—a flash of spots disappearing into thick green. Sunil whispered “leopard” but told us not to get our hopes up for another. Still, my heart was pounding for ages after.

Lunch was simple—some curry, some fruit—and we ate under these huge trees while monkeys watched us from above. The afternoon felt quieter somehow; even the light changed, softer through all those tangled branches. At one point we stopped near a lake where storks picked their way through mud. There’s this smell in Wilpattu—earthy but sweet? Hard to describe unless you’re there. Anyway, by the time we headed back toward Negombo I was sunburned and tired in that good way you only get after being outside all day.
