The experience
How do you fit Sri Lanka's temples, mountains, tea plantations and wildlife into one week? This tour threads them together over six days, starting with the Dambulla Cave Temple (a UNESCO site with over 150 Buddha statues carved into five sacred caves), then moving to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, where you climb 200 meters at sunrise to see the 5th-century ruins and frescoes before the heat sets in. A bullock-cart ride through Hiriwadunna Village and a catamaran crossing give you a glimpse of how rural farmers live. The Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, set beside a lake with golden roofs and daily rituals, anchors the spiritual side of the journey.
The route then climbs into the tea hills. You pass Ramboda Waterfalls cascading over 100 meters through mist and plantations, stop at a tea factory to watch the craft of Ceylon tea and taste it fresh, and walk around Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya's cool colonial air. The train from Nanu Oya to Ella is the centerpiece of day five: a slow, winding ride through emerald hills and villages that photographers call one of the world's best. In Ella, a short hike to Little Adam's Peak and a visit to the Nine Arches Bridge fill the afternoon.
The final day swings toward wildlife and coast. A safari in Udawalawe National Park puts you in a vehicle with an experienced guide hunting for wild elephants, deer, crocodiles and birds across grasslands and wetlands. Then you head to Mirissa Beach on the southern coast, where the journey ends in turquoise water and palm shade. Private transport in a Toyota Hiace van, a live guide who speaks English, French, German or Arabic, all park and temple entry tickets, and fuel are included throughout. You arrange meals and accommodation separately, though the operator can book hotels for you.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, French, German, Arabic and Russian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 14 years). Under 5: they can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Dambulla Cave Temple actually like when you get there?
Dambulla is Sri Lanka's largest cave temple complex, dating back over 2,000 years and carved into a vast granite outcrop. Five sacred caves hold over 150 Buddha statues, intricate murals, and a 14-meter reclining Buddha. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the hilltop location gives panoramic views of the countryside around it.
Do I climb Sigiriya in the dark, or does the sunrise happen after I reach the top?
You climb at sunrise, so you start in the early morning and reach the summit as the light comes up over the jungle. The 200-meter ascent takes time, and the view from the top (across the plains and ancient frescoes carved into the rock) is the reward for the climb.
Is the train ride to Ella a real journey I travel on, or just a scenic drive?
You board an actual train from Nanu Oya station and ride it to Ella. The route winds through tea plantations, mist-covered mountains, and rural villages, with windows open to the views. It's a full journey, not a short tourist ride, and it's considered one of the world's most scenic train routes.
What animals might I see on the Udawalawe safari?
Udawalawe National Park is known for its large wild elephant population, and the safari is your best chance to see them. The park's grasslands, wetlands and forests also hold deer, water buffalo, crocodiles, and numerous bird species. An experienced naturalist guides the safari vehicle.
Can I book the hotels myself, or does the tour arrange them?
The tour operator will arrange accommodation for you upon request. You don't book the hotels separately. The itinerary includes overnight stays at 4-star hotels in Dambulla, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, and Mirissa, but you confirm these arrangements when you book the tour.
