The Experience

Our driver, Sunil, greeted us outside Colombo airport holding a little sign with my name — I was weirdly nervous but he just grinned and handed me a cold water bottle. That first morning, we stopped at Dambulla Cave Temple. The air inside was thick with incense and something earthy; monks drifted by in orange robes while Sunil quietly pointed out faded murals. Later that day we bounced along red-dust roads for a safari — elephants everywhere. I’d seen photos before but seeing them up close (and hearing their low rumble) kind of stuck with me.

I thought climbing Sigiriya Rock would be the hardest part but it was actually peaceful early in the morning — just birds and a few other travelers panting up the steps. The view from the top is wild: mist hanging over green fields and little villages far below. Breakfast tasted better after that climb (maybe because I was starving). On our way to Kandy we stopped at a spice garden where I tried to guess what cardamom smells like — failed miserably — and Sunil laughed when I tried to pronounce “curry leaf” in Sinhala.

The train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Ella is famous for a reason. We couldn’t get tickets until the last minute (apparently that’s normal), but it was worth it: windows wide open, wind tangling my hair, tea plantations rolling past in every shade of green you can imagine. In Ella, climbing Little Adam’s Peak felt like walking through a postcard except I kept tripping over rocks because I was too busy gawking at the view. Later on, Yala National Park was all wild peacocks and distant leopards — not sure if we were luckier or just patient.

Mirissa was slower — mornings watching blue whales breach (still can’t believe how huge they are), afternoons wandering down to Parrot Rock or just sitting on Coconut Tree Hill as the sun dropped into the sea. Our last day ended with turtle hatchlings shuffling toward the waves near Galle Fort; somehow that tiny moment hit me harder than anything else on this trip. Sri Lanka gets under your skin — in a good way.
